Summer Beers – Round 1

Summer is almost here and what beer lovers crave is something light, crisp and easy to drink for the hotter months. I’ll be here to photograph what i’ll be drinking for the great weather we’re bound to have!

For this round of beers we have a Belgian style wit beer from Flying Dog and a crisp light lager from Estrella Damm.
Wit beers tend to be a cloudy, tart and a bit sweet and Flying Dog’s version is no different. If you like hefeweizen’s than this is a beer for you. For those that don’t know a whole lot about beers, just imagine a sweeter much more flavorful Blue Moon.

The lager from Estrella Damm is a brand those who frequent spanish tapas bars will recognize. Crisp, somewhat dry and just a hint of sweetness. This is something you can drink quickly right away. This is a light pale style lager similar to Sapporo.

Pairing beers with food is done in the same way it’s done with wine. The lighther the food the lighter the drink and the darker/bolder the food the darker the drink. These two will go well with nearly anything but especially with seafood and chicken dishes.

Izakaya

Ever wonder how the average Japanese person eats and drinks on a casual common basis? What would be the pub or sports bar equivalent? It’s an Izakaya, a traditional neighborhood establishment free of pretentiousness and injected with a huge dose of drinking, yelling, laughing and comfort food to accompany it all. This is how the average person drinks, sushi is reserved for special occasions in the same way that an american treats a fancy steak-house. Izakaya’s are rare in the u.s. because most markets often place north asian cuisine as fine dining but a few like this one can be found in NYC.
